Ten years ago, on Friday, September 1st, 2000, we both attended a choir party at Anastasia's house in Chico. We'd talked a few times in choir and at choir events, but it was this party, on this weekend, that solidified us into being friends. From here on out, Summer was always part of my activities in that last year at Chico.
What a wild and absolutely true ten years its been! Summer has lived in Chico, Sacramento, Napa, San Diego and now Oakland. She has gotten a master's degree (music history) and a marriage license (to an awesome guy named Ben who is wonderful to her). She's even become mom to a great dog named Buddy (who came with Ben as part of a package deal). I have lived in Chico, Folsom, England, Washington, Antioch and Stockton. No master's degrees or marriage lisences, but I've had my share of crazy adventures, too (most of which are, of course, documented right here at the LPB).
What pales in comparison to all of these adventures and life journeys is the friendship we've shared. I can't tell you how many scrapbooking days, movie nights, day trips (usually to the ocean), and crazy adventures we've had. We've cried on each others' shoulders, we've vented our stresses. As girlfriends do, we've watched each others' backs. We can talk for hours, and Summer is even willing to wait outside the Fox Theater in the chilly bay air wearing only a t-shirt so that I could meet Richard of Keane. Not one complaint passed her lips--and we were cold.
Friends are an important part of life, and while I often wish we could live nearer to each other and see each other more often, I know, too, that neither one of us will stop making the effort to have at least one monthly get-together of some kind. Hell, if Summer can make to England to see me, anything is possible, right?
Happy Friend-o-versary, Summer. Here's to many more years of friendship.
Summer's "Bachelorette Night" at John's Incredible Pizza in Stockton (June 2009). We played Skeeball.
Summer's Gradbirthuation party upon completing her Master's Degree and turning 30.
At Summer and Ben's first anniversary party in June 2010.
The date stamp is wrong--this was in late 2001, after I'd left Chico. I went back to visit when I could.
Snow day!! One of the rare Summer-and-Meg day trips that did not involve the ocean.
Waiting for the train at the Burnham-on-Crouch rail station. Summer was the only friend who was able to make it to England while I was there.
July 20, 2010, sitting down for a bit before Keane came on stage.
