The last couple of months have been a wee bit lean in my world. I had to be careful of spending, and so, I only allowed myself to buy used books (I got around this when the latest Stephanie Plum and Sookie Stackhouse books came out by letting Mom buy them for me, because she'll read them, too!). No Amazon purchases allowed.
Well, with July 1st came the start of a new fiscal school year--and I had forgotten that with the new fiscal year, I would move up a step on the salary scale. One step for every year, right? Somehow, I forgot all about it. Imagine my pleasant surprise on Friday when my paycheck came. It's not polite to talk about money, but I'll just say that it was quite a bit more than the June 30th check, and I'm finally back to earning what I was making in Antioch. Yay!
To celebrate, tonight I got on Amazon and bought two new books that have been on my wish list for ages. I can't wait to get them.
The first is Our Mother's War: Women at Home and at the Front During World War 2. I heard, somewhere, that this is an excellent book. I love WWII history, and find the so-called "Greatest Generation" fascinating. They sacrificed so very much. The men of "Band of Brothers" are heroes, and every time I see that another one has passed away, it saddens me. I'm looking forward to reading about the women who flew cargo planes, worked in factories, and, in general, helped the Allies win the war.
I also bought A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World. I seem to recall that this was recommended for people who like the writing of Bill Bryson, who is absolutely one of my favorite authors.
If you haven't read Bill Bryson, get thee to a bookstore--stat!--and purchase Notes From a Small Island or any of his other works. I mention Notes because it is the first book I read by this hysterical, talented man--it's a love letter to England from an American Anglophile. It was the only book that actually went to England with me in August 2004.
I've got some good reads coming to a mailbox near me. Perhaps I'll even post a review when I'm finished.

I will have to add Bill Bryson to my list! :)
I read so much it's out of control. I love owning books, but I rely on the library now. It just doesn't make sense for me to keep buying books. But oh how I want to...
My verification word is "rents" and that's exactly why I can't keep buying books. 'Cause I got to pay my rents. lol
Have you tried Paperback Swap? You get one credit for every book that someone else requests from you, and each book costs you 1 credit. You only pay for postage (generally media mail) to ship books requested from you, and get the ones you request for free! I have found Stephanie Plum books there, which is a great and inexpensive way to feed my habit! Might want to check it out...
