Purrsonality Profiles: Meet the Kitties

It's been a hair-raising weekend at Mom and Dad's house. We've got Daddy recovering from knee surgery, Millie recovering from pancreatitis, Bella throwing up inexplicably, Duchess being snarly and growly (very out-of-character), and Harley being, well, adorable.

There are four cats running around this place, so I thought I'd do purrsonality profiles for each one, starting with the Queen.

Millennium Joy

Age: 9
Owner of: Meg
Job: Queen Kitty
Likes: Greenies, sleeping in warm spots, cuddling with her mom.
Dislikes: Twerpy little brothers, pancreatitis, oral medications
Purrsonality: Millie is very sweet and loving--to me. She has bursts of affection that are somewhat aimed at Mom and Dad, but with me, she is all love and cuddles. Well, excepting when I aim a syringe of medicine down her throat. Last night, I got chomped on the thumb. She didn't break the skin, but yeee-ouch!!

Millie came into my life in December 1999, just as the Y2K scare raged, and everyone debated whether 2000 or 2001 was the start of the next millennium. I thought Millennium was a great name, and that it could be shortened to Millie. The middle name Joy came a few days later.

As Millie recovers from her bout of pancreatitis, her purrsonality is getting back to normal, though she's tired, a little weaker than usual, and perhaps a little bit crankier.

Bella Blue

Age: 3-and-a-half
Owner of: Mom and Dad
Job: Security Cat and "Sithter"
Likes: Belly rubs, hunting, cuddling with her "sithter," Duchess
Dislikes: Strangers
Purrsonality: Bella is very sweet and affectionate with her family--especially Mom and Dad. She is sometimes more standoffish with me, though since I babysat her and Duchess in October, she has been more affectionate when I visit.

She is incredibly shy of strangers, and I remember once, in our Washington house, watching her sit at the top of the stairs as someone rang the doorbell, growling at them for daring to come to our home.

She is the more feisty sister, and the star athelete. She's always had her Duckie around for cuddles. When they were kittens, it was often Bella who led the way into new adventures...though it was also Bella who freaked out the first time she saw a ceiling fan in our California house. She wears a red collar, because everyone knows that red is a "racy" color.

Lady Fuzz, Duchess of Lincoln

Age: 3-and-a-half
Owner of: Mom and Dad
Job: Homecoming Queen and "Sithter"
Likes: Cuddles, affection, getting brushed, cookies
Dislikes: Getting bathed, having knots in her fur,
Purrsonality: If Bella is the star athelete, Duchess is the Homecoming Queen. She is particularly known for having a glorious coat of long hair, which requires almost constant upkeep.

Duchess, like her sister, is shy of strangers, but with her family, she is eager for cuddles and attention. She is quick to roll onto her back when approached, and also quick to purr. She is also quick to get her morning cookies.

Surprisingly, our sweet, affectionate, gentle soul is having a big-time hissy fit over meeting her new nephew, Harley. She growls and hisses at him, even while following him around trying to sniff his behind. I hope she comes around soon, because her gentle influence could be very good for the little dude.

Harley Dude

Age: Just a week shy of 4 months
Owner of: Meg
Job: Resident Twerp and Comic Relief
Likes: Toys! Toes! Stuff that moves!!!
Dislikes: Being told, "no" and not being popular with the ladies
Purrsonality: Harley named himself. He purrs constantly, and he is loud about it. He loves me already, and hates that he must spend his nights in the bathroom with a donut bed and a fleece blanket, instead of on my bed, cuddling with me. Until the little dude can be trusted not to destroy my apartment, that's where he will spend his nights.

He is definitely a people cat. He has taken to his grandmother already, and, of course, used his considerable charms to win her over with a twitch of his whiskers and a rumbling motorcycle purr.

Harley is unafraid--he didn't much like the car ride to Grandma and Grandpa's house, but once here, he set off to explore, not minding at all that now, instead of having one cat growling at him, he has three. He goes on with his business, merrily playing with whatever toy comes into his line of vision first.

I have a feeling he will grow into a beautiful male speciman, but he'll always be my little dude.
