It's the most wonderful time of the year--I get two weeks off to sit in a warm house (and baby, it's cold outside!) reading whatever I want. This year, I've got a big ole stack of books--almost all of which belong to the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris.
I bought the first book, Dead Until Dark, a few weeks ago at Target. It is the basis for HBO's True Blood series. I thought it might be a fun read, and I was right. I immediately set out to buy the rest of the series. The most affordable way to do this was to buy the boxed set of the first seven books on Amazon.
I'm now a little over halfway through the second book, and I'm really enjoying them. I've been slow in my reading this week, because most nights I'm reading for maybe 30 minutes before passing out in utter exhaustion.
Anyway, the books are told from the point of view of Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress at a small-town Louisiana bar. She has a hard time finding suitors, because being able to read their minds and know their true thoughts...well, it spoils things. Enter Bill Compton, a vampire whose mind is completely closed off to her. They become lovers...and then the adventure really starts.
If you like Janet Evanovichs Stephanie Plum books, you might like the Southern Vampire series. Sookie is not as madcap and disaster-ridden as Stephanie, and the humor is much darker.
That's what I'll be reading in the next week or so. : )
Here's a pic of Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from True Blood:
