I had a job interview this morning (I think it went okay--there were about a gazillion people on the panel, which was just a little bit daunting). Because it was so early (9:00, and about an hour away), I took my gym bag along, planning to stop at the gym on my way home, so as not to get caught up with other stuff when I got back to the apartment.
When I pulled into the gym's parking lot, I was astonished at how few cars there were. It was nearing 11:00, and normally the gym is hustling at that time of day. Still, I got out and walked up to the entrance...to see a sign that said, "Sorry, we are temporarily closed."
This is 24 Hour Fitness, so when they're closed, it's either a national holiday, or something is going on. A few months ago, Gershom and I had to cancel an appointment when the power went out at the gym for a few hours. I figured it might be something like that today.
I walked over to a couple of guys standing nearby and asked what was going on.
"Some lady saw there was only one treadmill left and wanted it, so she drove right through the window!"
"WHA?!"
Well, he was being facetious about wanting the treadmill, but yes, a lady drove her car through the window of the gym this morning, hitting two treadmills (both occupied) and sending herself and two people to the hospital with mild to moderate injuries.
Thank goodness no one was more seriously injured!
I was sad to see my gym all messed up. They were working on getting it boarded up, but there was a lot of damage to some of the equipment. A few treadmills got smashed up, and some nearby weight machines might have, too. I can't imagine that the two rowing machines survived the impact.
Even though it's part of a large chain, and though none of the members ever seem to re-rack the weights or put anything back where it belongs (I spent a good couple of minutes yesterday looking for a 25-pound dumbbell for an upper-body exercise yesterday because it wasn't where it was supposed to be), I love my little gym. It's not the fanciest of 24 Hour's clubs, but it was this particular club where I found it in myself to get on track for a healthier lifestyle. I am known by many of the club's employees by name--if they don't know my name, they certainly know my face. They are all proud of my progress and I feel like I'm part of something there--it's one of the reasons I want to stay in Stockton.
