When 8th Graders Bring Penises (Penii?) to School

Yesterday, one of my 8th graders walked up to me to ask a question, about halfway through the class period. He had his assignment in one hand, and the other and palm-up. I glanced at it--and there was a piece of candy--shaped like a penis.

Of course I was shocked, but I chose to ignore it. He was obviously hoping to get a rise out of me, and I wasn't about to let him. I answered his question, and he went back to his seat.

I commented about it on my Facebook profile, but otherwise was about to let it go, when something occured to me: who else saw it? Did he run around showing it to girls? Are their moms going to call the school, screaming that some boy was showing the girls a penis in Ms. C.'s VAPA class?

So today, I consulted with my principal, because, honestly, in seven years of teaching, this is a first for me. Other female teachers were calling it sexual harrassment in the lunch room. I'm more inclined to believe it is a stupid 13-year-old boy with very little concept of what is appropriate and what is not.

My principal told me to write it up as a warning to him, and to call the parents. The parents don't speak English, so one of the school secretaries will have to help me out there. My high school Spanish didn't teach me how to tell a parent that her son brought penis candy to school.

And so the adventures continue, Wild and Absolutely True.

I was cracking up when I realized that "pene" sounds way too close to "penne."

I'll never eat penne pasta again without giggling. Yes, folks, I am 12.

Oh my gosh - I'll bet that boys parents are going to be horrified. He probably has an older brother who thought it was funny to give him. That's how my friend's 6 year old son ended up mooning his teacher and class.
