French Impressions

This is another imported post from my now-defunct blog "The Anxious Traveler." It was originally posted in July 2008.

Fifty miles northwest of Paris lies the small town of Giverny, home to Claude Monet. Monet, of course, was a French impressionist artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, famous for his gorgeous landscapes--and, in particular, his paintings of his own water lily pond.

Monet purchased the house in Giverny in 1890, after renting it for a couple of years. He painted several series of pictures based on the gardens there, the most famous pictures being of the water lily pond and the Japanese bridge that spanned it at one end.

In April 2005, I had the pleasure of visiting Monet's home and gardens in Giverny. The house is maintained much as it would have been when Monet lived there. His studio is now a gift shop, but the gardens are still lovinly kept. It is a pleasure to walk through them.

In April, there are no water lilies, but the view is still incredible. The pictures of the house, studio and lily pond below are my own work, with the exception of one my dad took, of me on the bridge.
